The Rwenzori Mountains Central Circuit is the oldest and most famous hiking trail in Rwenzori Mountains National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This circle, which goes across the varied habitats of Africa’s highest block mountain range, is known as the “Mountains of the Moon” route.
Length and Highlights of the Route
The circuit normally takes 7 to 9 days and starts and concludes at the Nyakalengija trailhead (Mihunga), which is near Kasese.
– manner: You can make the circuit in either a clockwise or counterclockwise round, but most itineraries go through the Bujuku Valley in a clockwise manner.
Key Peaks: The trail itself boasts amazing vistas, but a lot of people use it as a starting point to climb Margherita mountain (5,109m), which is the third-highest mountain in Africa. The trail also leads to Mount Speke and Mount Baker.
Experience Trekking
This trail is known for its unique views because it runs through five different types of plant life zones:
– Montane Forest (1,600m – 2,500m): This is where chimpanzees, L’Hoest monkeys, and the bright Rwenzori Turaco dwell.
– Bamboo Zone (2,500m–3,000m): The thick bamboo trees make the paths steep and slippery.
– Heather and Rapanea Zone (3,000m–4,000m): This area features big heathers that are covered in soft moss.
– Afro-Alpine Zone (4,000m–4,500m): This area is home to “Africa’s botanical giants,” such as gigantic lobelias and groundsels.
– Snow and Glaciers (Above 4,500m): There are always snowfields and enormous glaciers at the peaks.
Where to stay on the Trail
There are tent camps along the Kilembe Trail, but the Central Circuit uses simple wooden shelters that Rwenzori Mountaineering Services (RMS) takes care of.
– Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m): The first site where you might see or hear monkeys that live there.- John Matte Hut (3,505m): It’s just near to the magnificent Bujuku River.
– Bujuku Hut (3,962m): This hut is below the tall Mount Baker and Mount Speke.- Elena Hut (4,541m): A spot for climbers to prepare for the long ascent up Margherita Peak.
– Kitandara Hut (4,023m): This hut is near the magnificent Kitandara Lakes.
– Guy Yeoman Hut (3,505m): This hut is in the Mubuku Valley, not far from Kabamba Falls.
Important Facts
– Safety and Logistics: Treks must have an armed ranger from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and experienced local guides with them.
– What Time of Year Is Best for Trekking? The greatest periods are when it’s dry, which is from December to February and from June to August. Even with wooden boardwalks in place, the famous “Bigo Bogs” are much more difficult to move around when it rains.
How Hard It Is: The Central Circuit is hard since it features muddy bogs, tough rocky land, and high places. To climb Margherita Peak, you need special equipment such as ropes, crampons, and ice axes.
Are you getting set to trek to the summit of Margherita Peak, which is coated in ice, or would you rather take the magnificent Mahoma Loop, which is easier?
